The Snatch

(the pic is of Olympic hopeful Ingrid Marcum)

The Snatch is one of the most complicated lifts in all of sport. It is also the first lift contested in an Olympic Weightlifting meet. The weight starts on the floor, and in one smooth continuous swoop, the lifter hurls it all the way above their head ending with locked arms.

The lift is deceptive. It seems simple. And indeed, in a way it is: Bar starts on the floor, you pull it, and it’s over your head! But the agility, strength, balance, and coordination required to move a heavy weight in this manner is astronomical.
